Tipsy Chair
Daniel Hayden
Welcoming and incredibly comfortable, Daniel Hayden designed the Tipsy Chair to balance character and personality with the kind of simple, robust construction needed for outdoor use.
In this work Daniel has adopted the utilitarian and constructivist principles of Gerrit Rietveld and Enzo Mari; principles which embody resilience and stability.
Further inspiration for the Tipsy chair comes from Daniel’s recently-discovered passion for gardening, and from “the sheer uncomplicated joy of relaxing outside, taking in the riotous exuberance and abundance of a garden at its peak”.
Components are individually sawn and planed before every edge is rounded over to give the feel of modelling clay or chunky, slab-built ceramics. Then they are sanded through progressively finer grades, before being oiled.
Each edition of the Tipsy Lounge Chair is handmade by Dan in his studio, and will have its own unique variations.
Like all wooden furniture it is best covered or stored indoors over winter to maximise its lifespan. The oak will silver beautifully over time, so Dan encourages you to embrace and enjoy that natural process. To keep the chair in the best possible shape, simply reapply a thin coat of Osmo UV-Protection Oil Satin Matt 410 Clear every three to four years. The chair will be supplied coated in a UV-resistant oil to provide initial protection.
