Cedar of Lebanon Stool
Tom Nicholson Smith
Tom’s charred cedar stools – or side tables – come from a set of ten he made exclusively for Them Outdoors. Each one is unique, with detailed lines running through them that evolved from observing the shifting shadows of Miscanthus grass in Tom’s garden.
Like much of Tom’s work the stools are created to sit seamlessly within the landscape. “I don’t like things to stand out too much, or be too ostentatious” says Tom, who’s body of public work is dotted around his home county of Surrey. One of his last large-scale pieces, ‘Grains’ (created with Surrey Hill Arts), looks out over the landscape, each piece of wood resembling a grain of sand.
Tom’s stools have been treated with a preservative to protect them, and Cedar of Lebanon is a very durable material. Charring also helps prolong the life of the wood.
Each edition of this collection of ten stools were handmade by Tom in his studio and will have their own unique variations.
