Fred Clark trained at the Royal Drawing School and, since graduating in 2013, his work has evolved to include sculpture as well as drawing. Fred works closely with the Pangolin Foundry near his studio in Stroud, pioneering the materialisation of linear drawings in bronze. He also makes sculptures by hand in wire, paper, plaster and welded steel.
“I like to make sure you can always see the drawing underneath the form, so it’s more of an exoskeleton than an armature” explains Fred. “My work often focuses around animals, archetypes and mythology.
“My latest foray into furniture [for Them Outdoors] has been something I have always wanted to do. Some of my favourite sculptures are objects from the British Museum, and for the past 30,000 years humans have been depicting and modelling animal forms, often to decorate functional or sacred objects. To make functional, sculptural furniture feels like the most natural thing in the world to me.”
